Town Downhill

Posted on: March 6th, 2019 by thcAdmin No Comments

March 9th and 10th, 2019

The Town Downhill held on Snow King Mountain is one of the wildest and fastest public downhill races still out there. Anyone can enter this Western classic featuring racers from around the region. There are a number of classes including the crowd favorite “Fat and Baggy.” There are snowboard and telemark classes as well. Racers willing to pay multiple entrance fees can enter as many classes as they qualify for, providing some participants with multiple adrenalin filled runs down the “mini-hannenkam.”

Snow King Mountain’s steep pitch rockets racers down the course.  There is a pro-bump that gives the racers the option of “air”or “no air.” The finish line at the base makes for an entertaining scene. Saturday the 1st is a training/warm up day. The true racing heats up on Sunday with qualifying in the morning and the finals in the afternoon and is sure to provide some excitement.

Locals look forward to this event each Spring. The spectator turnout for this event tends to good. By purchasing a lift ticket and skiing at the mountain on race or training day, you can view the course from multiple points. Checking out the Pros coming out of the S-Chute’s “Pro Start” is pretty fun. The first turn is a doosie. A band and Dj generally play throughout the day, providing entertainment at the finish line. $5000 is cash and prizes are up for grabs.

Rubber Duckies, are inflatable kayaks designed for aquatic exploration. This a unique and exciting way of river running is safe and fun for the whole family. Inflatable Kayaking is far more thrilling than traditional white-water rafting and have no problem handling turbulent water.

These boats are extremely maneuverable and quite resilient. One of the most exciting ways to ride the river. The boat rides low in the water making smaller waves during the late summer much more fun. No previous river experience is necessary. Experienced instructors will familiarize you with equipment. After providing a brief river safety course and paddling instruction your adventure begins. You will find these watercraft amazingly simple to control. The section of the Snake River that is run, provides class III rapids. All equipment and transportation is included.

Myself and members of my family have enjoyed taking the Duckies down the Snake. Guided trips are offered by Rendevous River Sports.

2015 Events is cancelled due to poor snow conditions

The World Championship Snowmobile Hill Climb is held each March on Snow King Mountain. The race is put on by the Jackson Hole Snow Devils, a local snowmobiling organization. This event fills the town and attracts over 10,000 spectators throughout the course of the weekend. The race course rises nearly straight up from the base of Snow King. It is simply amazing that riders are able to pilot these machines up such a steep pitch.

It was not until the early 90’s that many sleds even had a chance of summiting the challenging course. With the advent of new technologies, since the mid nineties, it is truly a race versus a high point competition.

The Octane Addictions Freestyle Demo is a snowmobile jumping event at the Teton County Fairgrounds rodeo arean. Tickets are $20.

This event is sure to provide some high speed thrills and spills! The central viewing area and that corner of town in general tend to be pretty lively. If you have never seen something like this before, make some time to take in the hill climb. The racing heats up over the weekend with qualifying Saturday and the finals, “King of the Mountain,” on Sunday. Racing starts up early at and generally lasts until 5p.m. or so.
Schedule of Events.

Take the chairlift to the summit and back down to see the race from an entirely unique perspective. The views of the valley from the chairlift on a clear day are pretty spectacular as well. Should choose to walk down along the course, be prepared for a steep and potentially thrilling descent.

Book your lodging early as the town tends to get pretty full over the hill climb weekend. With the event being held in town, many properties are with walking distance of the hill climb. Utilize the S.T.A.R.T. bus to get around town. Don’t drink and drive, there tends to be a heavy police presence around the valley for this event.
