Moulton Barn

Moulton Barn jackson hole grand teton national park

Thomas Alma Moulton built this barn to shelter his horses against the harsh winters of Western Wyoming and Jackson Hole. Thomas had no idea that he was building a future landmark. Carving out a living on this beautiful piece of land was not easy. The Moulton family worked together along with their neighbors to create what is now known as Mormon Row.

The structure was begun in 1913 and took many years to be in its current form.  First the structure was built as a square box, and later the peak and a lean-to side was added.  Eventually, more room was needed necessitating addition of the other lean-to side.  This was a functional working barn.  It was never intended to be the most photographed barn in America.

Two brothers, Thomas, John filed on their 160 acre homesteads in of 1907.  Wallace, the third brother, filed one year later.First a small cabin was built to live in during the summer months while working the land and constructing the barn.  Alma, Lucile and baby Clark moved over from Idaho into the homestead in 1912. The cabin was little more than four walls with a dirt floor. The family continued to work the ranch until 1961.
