Gaper Day

Posted on: March 28th, 2020 by thcAdmin No Comments

April 1st Every Year

A mountain tradition. April Fool’s Day is a traditional Spring right of passage for those who live in mountain towns. The day can provide large amounts of entertainment as locals do their best to poke a little fun at the tourists with which they have shared the slopes with throughout the season.

A “gaper” is a slang term for “out of towner/beginner” in the Rocky Mountain region. The party is sure to be on and off of the slope. Get costumed up and enjoy this ski town celebration. Start riding the Thunder Chair at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort around noon to take in the action.

Mind your P’s and Q’s. Do not get so reckless that the local law enforcement officers find you in their sights. Utilize public transportation and be safe.

Hiking to Goodwin Lake

Posted on: September 2nd, 2019 by thcAdmin No Comments

Level: Moderate

Distance: 2.5 miles, 5 miles round trip

Goodwin Lake is a classic Jackson Hole hike, providing some beautiful views of the Tetons. Goodwin Lake is located on the eastern side of the valley and its trail head is accessed via the National Elk Refuge. Getting to the trail head provides a scenic drive through the refuge.

The trail begins with a few climbs and then undulates for most the remaining hike. Its nice to get the elevation gain out of the way early, it warms you up fast and gets the painful part out of the way quickly. At the end you will be at Goodwin wake, which can provide for an exhilarating swim. Jackson Peak is the mountain that dominates most of your Southerly views. You will see a considerable amount of beetle kill in this area, a sad problem plaguing forests in the Rockies.

The hike can be lengthened by adding in the summit of Jackson Peak, which rewards the hiker beautiful views of the valley.

Directions:

The drive will take about 30 minutes from the Jackson Town Square. From the town square follow Broadway to its eastern terminus, which is a few blocks past the hospital. Take the Left out onto the National Elk Refuge, it is 10 miles to the trail head from this point. Follow this road for 3.6 miles then take a Left, do not continue straight over the cattle guard. At 4.7 miles go Right proceeding past the Curtis Canyon Campground (7.3 miles in) until you reach the trailhead parking area. Follow the road. The drive does not require four wheel drive, just a little clearance.

General Information

Water, sunscreen and supportive footwear are recommended. You can always make it a picnic hike. Enjoy!

The Miller House in Jackson Hole is a historical landmark. Located on what is now the National Elk Refuge. The Miller Cabin complex consists of three buildings that were the residence of Robert A. Saturday mornings on the Town Square June 22 thru September 23, 2019

The Jackson Hole Farmers Market occurs each Saturday morning on the Town Square from July thru September for the Summer season. The market runs from 8am to 12pm. Not only are there fruits and veggies, but baked goods, canned good and more. The community and visitors to the area have embraced the Farmers Market since it kicked off in the Summer of 2000. Attendance has steadily grown each year as the Farmer’s Market has become more diversified and now offers a larger number of vendors.

Raised in a family with a large garden, I was exposed to fresh produce at an early age. Flavor is the best part. Local produce tends take on the characteristics of its environment. High elevation, frost resistant crops that are widely grown in the area possess a fabulous crispness and taste.

The growing trend of Farmers Markets across the country has helped to nurture awareness of healthy eating, buying locally and getting to know your neighbors. The Hole Concierge strongly endorses increased consumption of organic foods, the localization of production and its inherent benefits. Farmers Markets provide healthy locally grown and produced products which in turn assists in creating sustainability within local economies. A number of small organic farms have cropped up in the area over the last few years creating jobs and reducing commuter traffic in the area.

Featured each week is a different chef, musician or group, and a non-profit. Vendors at the market donate 10% of their gross sales to the non-profit of the week. Over the past ten plus years the market has donated over $200,000 to local non-profit organizations. There are games for the kids and other features of the market. Hope to see you down on the Square.

Some local transportation services do have guides that can tour people through the valley for an hourly private driver fee starting at about $90/hr. This is great for people short on time. One can always combine a short tour with airport transportation to fill the void on your travel day. If you have a 1pm flight or later, get a guide for a few hours on the way to the airport. The Elk Refuge and Grand Teton National Park are on the way after all.

Art Fair Jackson Hole

August 9, 10, 10 of 2019

Art Fair Jackson Hole is held twice a summer. The art fair is held in Miller Park, just a few blocks South West from the Town Square on Deloney St. There are a large number of artists on display, a food court and live music. There are hands on art activities in which the whole family can participate. A number of local musicians perform throughout the weekend. One of my favorite Summer events, it has grown quite a bit over the years, but still maintains a unique atmosphere.

The Jackson Hole Art Association has cultivated this event into a great weekend of art. The fair was first held in 1965 in an effort to bring a diversity of artist to this quaint Western community. The three day format certainly is an enhancement giving folks a bit more time to make their way there. More than 150 artists are on display during this three day event.  Be sure to stop by and take a look. Take advantage the opportunity to meet the artists and view an amazing array mediums. The wide variety of things to take in is why I enjoy spending a leisurely afternoon checking the art fair out. Entry fee is $5/person.

The event will run from 10am-6pm on Friday, 10am-7pm on Saturday, and 10am-4pm on Sunday.

Wildflowers are Blooming!!!

Posted on: July 22nd, 2019 by thcAdmin No Comments

The wildflowers are starting to pop all over the valley. Southern exposures in particular are showing color. Soon the bloom will be working its way North into Yellowstone. Truly amplifying the overall Park experience. The majority of the bloom is currently in the Southern end of the valley.  For optimal viewing I would suggest hiking or biking in the Munger Mountain,  Cache Creek, Game Creek or Snow King Mountain areas. All of these areas are starting to gain good color with a wide variety of species in bloom. The lower to mid elevations of  Teton Pass have been delightful to explore over the last week as the flowers have begun to show  their colors there as well.

Going into late June and early July the bloom should begin to work its way well into both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. It looks like it should be a good year for those seeking to take in the Western wildflower bloom while touring the area. Guided tours are a great way to gain some in depth knowledge of the area and can make it a pleasure to explore our vast ecosystem. Horseback riding, hiking and biking tours will allow a deeper immersion into this special time of year with a bit more solitude. Slow it down and enjoy what Mother Nature is sharing.

There is a food court located inside the main fair grounds with all of your usual delights. I recommend not missing out on some local fixin’s over by the events tent. You will find a large grassy area with some picnic tables located near the “Big Top” events tent.

A collection of rides and games can be found around the fair’s “midway” that are sure to thrill children and adults.

Figure 8 Races seem to be a big hit with locals and visitors. In years past the Demolition Derby was the Sunday night featured event. Soon after the introduction of of the Figure 8’s, it replaced the Derby. Full throttle action, these guys out the pedal down!!!

This event combines the smash and crash of a derby with a little finese. Cars race around a figure 8 track where “rubbin’ is racin’!” A fireworks display concludes the fair on Sunday evening. Come on out and enjoy our fair!

Roller Derby is Back!!

Come on out and cheer on the gals! A flat tracked style of derby is what you will find here, not the bruiser ramp style that often comes to mind. Since its inaugural season, there has already been a tremendous amount of community support. The first match was held in 2012 and drew an overwhelming crowd for its kick off event. Doors open at 6p.m. with the action starting around 7p.m. The cost is $10/Adults and $5/Children.

One would not know it is only their first year in the league by the way these ladies skate and play. There is some fast action combined with moments of pure finesse. The action is virtually non-stop. There is also a band at half time to keep you entertained. To find out more about the Jackson Hole Juggernauts check out their website.
